I need to do something about my work.  It feels impossible to critique.  It's certainly not perfect.  It has tons of compositional and conceptual problems, but I'm afraid no one ever says anything about those.   Is it because I come across as an ass-kicker?  Are you all afraid of me?  I just talk a lot, but I'm really soft on the inside.  I swear.  For god's sake, there's a lot of bad stuff in these drawings I pin up.  Please tell me what you really think!

  1. The art is top tier Katia. Your pieces are interesting to experience as they have an abstract yet playful ( maybe childlike ) angle to them.

You come across as a well spoken but "curt" critic... that gives off some negative vibes. At least that's how I see it.

Would be cool to see what you can do with a camera...

  2. Alright, already! As to comments (and I definitely agree you should be getting more) let's have a talk in class. The emphasis on issues (the "tons of compositional and conceptual problems") let's talk about how YOU see this--how you'd frame the question. I always find it intriguing, with your work, to go through the process of zeroing in on what scale at which I'm to engage the work. It's enjoyable to find the "minute" is a significant as the overall. That said, tell us more about your OWN inner dialogue. That will get some response, I think--and teach everyone how to "see" what you're doing.

Another thought--your passion for music as a kind of parallel (if not replacement even?) for your visual engagements. The way you speak about music is always broad and decisive. When about the visuals, often you go to the smaller scale. Ask me about this...

  3. PS. I think that the way you "talk" about your work is very much a product of what you did as undergrad. Part of the mix--tell us about it. Again, to present the terms...

  4. Read autobiographically, those pushpins--and the hole-filled homosote--oyyyyyyyyyy. Leaves the work stranded in an industrial wasteland (a patch violets along the edge of Cutting Boulevard in central Richmond...
